Masculine Mastermind
StartJan 15
EndJan 15
Join Johnny + Joshua for Archipelago's monthly masculine mastermind. "It is time for a new man to arise in the world, a breaking away of the old paradigm and ideals of masculinity so that we can align with our highest intentions and support our community in transformation and growth. A New Man will be co-lead by the members. Each member will pick a topic, whether it be related to career, relationships, love, spirituality, health, finances, or other, they feel passionate about and at a future meeting they will lead the group that evening, sharing their insights and thoughts which will lead into a number of thought-provoking questions that stimulate conversation. The night will start off with some rituals to deepen our connection and create a profound and powerful space for sharing before a New Man will launch into their topic of choice. We desire to stimulate conversations on powerful and relevant subjects through which we will challenge and teach as peers. Bring your opinions and share your heart as we dive deep into various themes."

The Spleen and Splenectomy Procedures: Who, What, When, Why? with Dr. Nekesa Morey, BSc, BVM&S
StartJan 23
EndJan 23
Join Dr. Nekesa Morey, BSc, BVM&S, for her lecture:  "The Spleen and Splenectomy Procedures:  Who, What, When, Why?" The spleen is an intricate organ, visualized usually at the most ventral aspect of the abdomen with both AFAST and abdominal radiographs. Its structure is usually divided into the head, body and tail of the spleen, with various vessels connecting to the spleen before supplying the rest of the abdominal organs. Its primary function includes haematopoiesis, circulation and destruction of red blood cells as well as primary immunologic function. As it is directly connected to the circulation, it is a primary organ for the release of lymphocytes and monocytes, which increase antibody release to fight disease. As the animal continues to get older, the spleen can become more susceptible to the development of diseases directly to the organ. The most common biological insults include splenic torsion, splenomegaly and splenic masses. Usually, depending on the clinical scenario that arises, a splenectomy can be performed to remove the spleen. This is an organ that an animal can live without, and depending on the cause, most animals can continue to do well without their spleen. A splenectomy may be performed under emergency circumstances or in some instances can be an elective procedure. This lecture will go into further significant detail about the primary functions of the spleen, as well as any differences in structure and physiologic function between small mammals and humans. We will continue to describe the three diseases mentioned above, the more likely signalments we would expect in the veterinary world that could develop these diseases and therefore would warrant a splenectomy. We will continue to describe the procedure of a splenectomy itself and discuss medical management if a splenectomy is not opted for. Overall, this lecture should increase confidence in the approach to diseases involving the spleen, and increase awareness of its functions during disease.  Lunch will be provided One (1) hour CE - CACVT approval pending for Technicians Please arrive 15 minutes early to check-in. Attendees will need to enter the hospital at the south east entrance, just off of 43rd Ave and Kipling.
