EndMar 21
Volunteers are vital to The Action Center’s success!!In 1968, The Action Center was formed by a group of volunteers concerned for struggling families in the community. Today, nearly half a century later, volunteers are still at the core of The Action Center. There are more than 40 unique volunteer opportunities that include direct participant interaction, behind the scenes tasks and special events, just to name a few. Opportunities fall into one-time or weekly formats and are available for individuals, families, and groups – there’s a match for everyone! In 2016, 4,734 individuals contributed 103,048 hours of service! Without them, The Action Center would have needed 80 additional staff members to meet the needs of the community! Check out this brief history of volunteerism at The Action Center. Our volunteers list “To Help Others” and “The Volunteer Team” as their top two reasons for volunteering with The Action Center. Volunteers produce a direct and immediate impact on the lives of our struggling neighbors every day. They create a vibrant and active volunteer community where they make new connections in a rewarding and supportive environment. Learn More! The first step to becoming a volunteer is to sign-up for a New Volunteer Orientation! For more information about Orientation, contact the Volunteer Manager at volunteer@theactioncenterco.org or 303.237.7704.

Thomas Gabriel ( Grandson of Johnny Cash )
StartMar 28
EndMar 28
T.G. - as those closest to him call him - is the oldest grandchild of Johnny Cash. Predominately raised on the road, he often dreamed of a life as a successful career musician. When he was young, his grandfather would call him onstage, to sing “When the Saints Go Marching In. At 21, he was in the studio trying out his voice. Johnny would say, “Son, you sound a lot like I did when I was younger; work on those vocals.”Johnny also insisted that T.G. have a back-up option, so he went to the police academy, and into police work.Life and adversity has kept him from pursuing his dreams, but he has regained control over his life, and is back in the world that holds so much potential for him.Along with his voice that sounds so much like his grandfather’s, he brings a wealth of stories from his memories of his childhood and of growing up a member of such an iconic family. This is an extremely intimate venue and tickets will be limited. https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamwindsor/2018/11/21/johnny-cashs-grandson-thomas-gabriel-comes-full-circle/?fbclid=IwAR2xpe25UgzDwMuSYvvJP-vtYsvl2FI5WQ5_WQ1dC-CWozbVCJEeoAIgEo0#4d3e2dbb4f13

Lunchtime Webinar - Flexible Works: flexible working as part of the good work agenda for HR professionals
StartMar 29
EndMar 29
Flexible Works:  flexible working as part of the good work agenda for HR professionals Having flexibility in a job role is seen as desirable by over 70% of the UK working population. However recent research undertaken by the CIPD for their Megatrends report highlights that the extent to which we are working flexibly has seen little change over the last 15 years. With CIPD Chief Executive, Peter Cheese, chairing the government-led Taskforce on Flexible Working and flexible working being seen as a key component of the good work agenda, the Coventry & Warwickshire branch are delighted to be running a webinar on flexible working. As a branch we have historically run most of our professional development events in an evening which is not convenient for all our membership. Therefore in the spirit of operating more flexibly and inclusivity, we are experimenting with the webinar format for the first time at branch level. The webinar will last for one hour, will be hosted by branch Vice-Chair, Sally Dhillon, who will give an overview of the webinar functionality in addition to an introduction to the subject matter and #theCWdifference good work campaign. We will then hear from our two speakers: A Case Study on Flexible Working "Inside Atkins”  - with guest speaker Jennifer McClellan, HR Operations Partner, Transportation, Atkins Turning Flexible Working into Smart Working - with Ruth Gawthorpe, CEO Smart Working Revolution If you would like to take part in this webinar please register on this event page and you will be sent further details about how to log on to the webinar. Guest speakers Jennifer McClellan is a Human Resources Business Partner at SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business.  She is a passionate champion of diversity and inclusion, particularly in relation to supporting working parents in order to achieve greater gender balance both within and outside the workplace. Jennifer started an employee network to better support individuals and managers with the challenges of balancing parenting and work. The network has gone from strength to strength and discusses many issues, providing a support network and buddy system for pregnant women and new and “experienced” parents. Atkins recently signed the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s Working Forward Pledge publicly demonstrating its commitment to continuous improvement. Flexible working is a key theme in their 2019 action plan and forms a core part of the Business Strategy, People Strategy and Diversity and Inclusion Strategy. Ruth Gawthorpe is a passionate champion of Smart Working. Here’s her story.....  20 years ago, Ruth and her business partner, Oliver Thompson, started rolling out smart working options, such as term time teams, gym teams and compressed weeks into a corporate organisation. They’ve not stopped since. They have developed a methodology for successful implementation and, crucially, know what it takes to avoid the pitfalls. 5 years ago Ruth became wheelchair bound for a while and realised just how much talent cannot do the commute 5 days a week. Today, she’s CEO of the Smart Working Revolution. Ruth and the team support Business Leaders who are passionate about adopting Smart Working because it benefits business, employees and customers as well. When adopted widely, the impact of Smart Working on society will be powerful. That’s why Ruth and Olly lobby Government bodies and National associations to support organisations who implement smart options.
